Just when all the gardens have been put to bed, it is time to order seeds for the coming year. I get most of mine from Fedco Seeds, which has a great selection of heirlooms as well as good prices.
Before I order, I go through the seeds I still have from the prior year to see what grew well and what types of seeds did not and need swapping out for a different variety. I never keep seeds longer than 2 years so older ones are discarded and composted. (Ironically I often get a crop of something popping up in the compost mid-Spring.)
This year, I have many seeds left over so I don’t need to order as many as in prior years. Charlotte is a bit shocked at my list but I tell her that it pales to those of prior years.
Now the fun begins. . .I go over every page of the catalog figuring out what I need to purchases for both my use and that of my clients for the coming year. I always purchase more seeds than I can plant and I always plant more seeds than I have places for.
Like last year, I will be growing more things for my clients than purchasing plants. Even at wholesale prices, it has become increasingly difficult to keep within my budget for my clients. Thus the greenhouse will be even fuller this Spring with seedlings. In a weird way, I can hardly wait.
