Lovely grasses

Northern sea oats (Chasmanthium latifolium) is one of my favorite grasses that persist well into Winter. Developing expansive seed heads that turn a purplish brown, it waves to and fro in even the most gentle breeze with a soft and pleasing rustle. Its stalks become a light brown but not a dry looking brown as is all to common with other grasses.

Last year a freezing rain left them sanding looking like bejeweled arrow fletches. I planted a stand of them at Ann’s Place to define the lawn pavers on the eastern side of the property. Their only disadvantage is that they do self seed a bit. Perhaps I will take a volunteer or two home next Spring.
