Foxgloves (Digitalis) are consistent volunteers in our gardens. After introducing them with seed and plants into our soil over 20 years ago, we have never had to again.
We never know where this poisonous as well as medicinal plant will emerge and it doesn’t matter to us; we only move this biannual in the Fall when it emerges in a path or the lawn.
I love how this vertically oriented plant flowers almost in inverse order from the bottom up. Bees snuggle into its bell-shaped flowers to grab pollen much as a child would a too tight sleeping bag.
Nearly a decade ago, a field of foxglove emerged in the back hill after a couple of dead ash trees (Fraxinus americana) were removed creating a large sunlit space. While it lasted, it was lovely.
