In less than few days, the weather has flipped into high gear and hot temperatures. With this change comes the need to harvest tasty and pungent garlic scapes, which have exploded in the last few days.

They are the by-product of hard-neck garlic and pre-date the harvest of the bulbs by about a month or so. Olivia wants to help me in this task. She sits on the step leading from the greenhouse portion of the vegetable garden to that where the herbs and other perennials are grown. Handing her each scape individually, she arranges them in a basket taking in the smell with a smile. As she helps me here, she also helps herself to a few leaves of sorrel, munching them with a big smile on her face.
Basket full, we head over to Juana where we will use our harvest for pesto, stir-fry, and other summer treats.
