Following Lewis & Clark

Time for another episode of Erik & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (on bikes). Yesterday we landed in St. Louis and caught a quick cab to St. Charles, the first capital of Missouri, located along the Missouri River. We are hoping the day’s 90 degree heat will not follow us for the next week.

We are biking along the river on the Katy Trail for nearly 240 miles starting in Clinton and ending in St. Charles. Like many of our trips, the route is along an old, abandoned rail bed that has been turned into a pedestrian trail. It also follows (for a short while) the path that Lewis & Clark followed on their way to the Pacific.

Waiting for our bikes to be outfitted for the trip, we visit the Lewis & Clark Boathouse and Museum to see the route our predecessors took. Assistance from indigenous Americans and knowledge of native plants were key factors in the success of the expedition.

Ted and I don’t need similar help to ensure success, though we are looking for good St. Louis BBQ. After consulting a variety of locals, we settle on Salt + Smoke, smack in the middle of the historical district. We are not disappointed.

We then continue our search for sustenance winding up at The Baked Bear, which specializes in custom ice cream cookies. With our appetites sated, we take a slow and long walk back to our hotel appreciating the lovely architecture and features of the town.

Tired and happy, we call it an early night, ready to start our peddling adventure the next day.
