As it was about noon on a hot day, I thought there would be no better place to take a rest than a local ice cream parlor. So while Ted was stretching his legs and reading a historical plaque, I Googled ice cream and struck pay dirt: A highly rated ice cream parlor just 500 feet down the street off the trail. So Ted and I turned off the trail and headed to Whit’s Frozen Custard.
Though very hot, Whit’s was empty and the simple store at a strip mall had three simple flavors: vanilla, chocolate and penguin tracks, its special flavor of the week. We opt for the special.
It was wonderful.
Sitting outside next to our bikes I was thinking about how fortunate Ted and I have been by being able to take this trip together and explore different parts of the country that we had never travelled before. We also have had pretty good weather as these trips can go. But getting back to the ice cream.
The flavor was a mix of vanilla frozen custard, caramel, chocolate bits and fudge. It was perfect as a pre-dessert to the lunch we would have in an hour or so. We slowly consumed our cups of ice cream trying not to finish too quickly, savoring its flavor and coolness. It was delicious. I was tempted to take a nap but fought the urge. Time to get back on our bikes.
