Moose alert

In bucolic New England, most of the road signs warning us of wildlife are for deer. These yellow, diamond-shaped warnings litter the streets with ones in more rural settings riddled with rifle and shotgun holes.  But starting to travel across New Brunswick towards Charlottetown, PEI, the real concern is moose. Black silhouetted moose profiles decorate the highways warning motorists to avoid this very large ungulate at all costs.

Strangely, on our trip so far there are no signs warning of deer. Does this means if you hit a deer in Canada, it is like going over a speed bump too fast? Have they all been sent across the border to affluent towns like Ridgefield to eat the shrubbery? Or is the threat of moose-ageddon so high that we all must be warned of impending doom if we don’t stay alert while we drive?

The trees along the shoulders seem so tightly packed, quite frankly I don’t see how a moose could even fit through the forest and threaten a car. But just to stay on the safe side, we both keep our eyes peeled for an animal that weighs a little less than my first Toyota. Perhaps we will stay lucky and encounter only the occasional splat of a bug on the windshield for the rest of our journey.
