Ted and I have hit the road again with our bikes for our annual Le Tour de Geezers. It is hard to believe but this will be our seventh bike adventure together in eight years. We return to Canada where we road and ate our weights in seafood through Prince Edward Island. But this is a different location as we will bike the Laurentians in Quebec along Le P’tit Train du Nord, a 200-km rail trail, as well as a 60-km extension named the Aerobic Corridor. With detours off these trails, we should be biking around 340 miles over 8 days.
Our journey starts in Bridgeport, CT, where I pick up Ted and his wheels at the ferry terminal then it is north we go. The trip is mostly uneventful with the exception of a downpour that we decide to wait out as a rest stop. The rolling Adirondack Mountains are a uniform green to my eye that are mostly populated with conifers that are crowded together with few gaps. The roadside is filled with tall grasses and wild parsnip flowers.
Arriving at the Canadian border, our passports and belongings are viewed by a muscular border agent who decides that a pair of aging bicyclists are little threat to national security. We are waved through. After creeping our way though rush-hour Montreal traffic, we arrive at our starting point: the city of St. Jerome.
We are tired at this point as both of us woke up around 3 am in anticipation of our new adventure. A trip across the street from our hotel to a burger joint for an excellent meal and beer is a perfect ending for the day. We will be hitting the pillows soon.
