Fall spices

Juana and I take the opportunity to harvest saffron from the crocuses. It has been a miserable few days with rain and a chill keeping both of us close to the warm, yellow and red fire blazing in the stove. Still, we both are happy waking to clear skies this morning progressing to a sunny, warming day in the afternoon. The purple flowers are open exposing the yellow (male) stamens and the orange (female) stigmas, which we will harvest. A few bees are active appearing drunk as they hop from flower to flower covered with yellow pollen. Juana and I suffer from the same bright coating as our careful extractions of the three orange strands of saffron challenges our eyes and tweezers. It is the hardest harvest of all our crops. After a good 15 minutes, we pull a single tablespoon of saffron, which should suffice for a nice paella. Yum! 😋
