The birds are always active looking for a snack regardless of size. Flying high are pelicans, anhingas and ospreys looking for yummy seafood and making a quick and decisive dive to capture a morsel. Closer to the ground are sanderlings that scamper in a pack pecking the sand looking for sustenance. Their quick and coordinated movements make them appear as if they are in fast-forward mode moving back and forth and then with little warning taking off and circling around.
At low tide, it is easy to see what they are looking to gorge themselves on. Countless tiny crabs deftly move in and out of holes in the sand as they move in and out of the surf. Juana lingers in one space too long and a crustacean rests on her big toe. Recently hatched fingerlings are in every puddle left in the sand. The luckier ones swim and school in deeper waters.
In the past week, floating Sargassum sea weed has been adding to the wrack. With this comes tiny hitchhiking anglerfish, also called frog fish, who seem uncomfortable when not nestled in their blanket of seaweed.
