Walking down the driveway this morning for the newspaper, I see the effects of the first frost. The raised bed where string beans and sunflowers stood tall only weeks ago is covered with a powder-sugar veneer of white. The sunflower stumps stand erect but appear to shiver at the first extreme cold of the season.
The bed of leeks in the foreground shrug off this temporary coldness as do the Montauk daisies in the background. They need a chill in the 20s or teens to be much moved. And the asparagus ferns further back are indifferent, their lacy tall appendages standing firm.
Picking up the paper, the air is crisp and fresh, tingling my nose as I breathe in and out. The sun is emerging from the hillside and as its rays start to hit the beds, the thin white sheet covering the soil begins to fade with the morning.
