I welcome most volunteers in the garden. Two of the best this year are a pair of tomato plants that have established themselves in a new bed I set up for saffron crocuses.
I created this new space in early June after splitting up over 250 corms that needed replanting. To give the new bed color and interest, I planted oregano, basil and a couple of coleus plants around the border.
In a few weeks, a pair of tomato plants emerged. Juana kept me from weeding them out and I’m glad she did. It is now covering the entire bed with long stems, flowers and tiny green tomatoes.
I’m a bit surprised as to its size and health as both plants are barely 2 months old and they are now the largest tomato plants in any of my gardens. The fact they get only morning sun adds to the puzzle.
