Wildflower and wild flower Wednesday. It is a perfect day to spot new wildflowers on my bike ride. Here is a partial list of the newest flowers to emerge in my area.
Wild geraniums (Geranium maculatum): This roadside flower pops up in hundreds of different forms in mid to late Spring.
Wisteria (Wisteria frutescens): This long and woolly vine has among the most fragrant and explosive flowers of any native around my area. It can be a bit aggressive, however, as the tree it’s enveloping is looking slightly the worse for wear.
Fleabane (Erigeron): This aster look-a-like makes it’s appearance in the Spring rather than the late Summer or Fall.
Buttercup (Ranunculus bulbosus): This is such a happy flower I never weed it out of any of my gardens when it emerges. This one was along the border of a haying field.
Rose: And the rose that always blooms around my daughter’s Sarah birthday, like clockwork, has emerged in spectacular fashion. A yearly wondrous event.
Perhaps the best wildflower was one seen by my friend @mattsharp85 who spotted an elusive lady slipper (Cypripedium) at a local park.

A pink lady slipper became my favorite childhood flower after I chanced upon one
in the deciduous woods of my elementary school playground. In my ignorance I
cut off the flower to bring it home, a move elicited from ignorance that I regret to this day.
We all make mistakes in our youth.The key is not to repeat as we age.
