We have an heirloom rose bush on the corner of our property that has been there ever since we purchased our house over 30 years ago. Our neighbors at the time told us that this bush has always been part of the original estate, which our structure is part of, and is likely to be over 100 years old.
It is a very thorny rose bush with delicate little yellow flowers and a heady scent. What makes it special to Juana and I is that it always blooms for our daughter Sarah’s birthday. So we call it Sarah’s rose.
Now that she has moved away and has a lovely home, I have been trying to propagate it for a couple of years so she can have a few bushes of her own. Prior efforts to create a separate bush by layering didn’t work so last year I took a dozen cuttings to create a new plant for her. Though nine of them died over the last three seasons, three cuttings have survived and are sprouting new leaves. I hope she will like them.
