Flowers are always on the supermarket list this time of year. Part of Juana’s Winter survival strategy is to decorate as many windowsills as possible with fragrant and flowering plants. The kitchen sill has daffodils (Narcissus), primrose (Primula vulgaris), a lone cyclamen, and my grasshead. Many of the tiny pots get cycled out every couple of weeks as the flowers fade. They then are retired to the garage, where they will continue to grow and eventually get planted in the yard.
Juana’s orchids are having a tough time this year as they typically spend the Winter in Florida (with us). But Juana’s sprays them every day in the attempt to keep them moist; a difficult job in a house whose humidity is usually south of 30% in the Winter. Plants that no longer are luscious enough for the sill find a place on the floor of our dining room next to a sliding glass door. Tulips, in particular, come and go rather quickly making Juana tell me that they are not worth the money or effort. Something I need to cross off my list.
