As Ted and I headed for the bar at Galloway Tavern outside Columbus today we were greeted by one of our best friends: John Reiner. Well not John in the flesh but his alter ego Leroy and Loretta of the Lockhorns comic strip that he authors. Ted and I were surprised but pleased at the wide dispersal of his work. Someone had enlarged one of his strips with the caption “Stop referring to our anniversary as ‘time served.’”
Ironically the Tavern was the perfect place for John’s work to be displayed: it was dark and dingy with old paneling on the walls and $1 bills stapled on the ceiling. A pool table sat in the front of the bar illuminated by a Youngling beer lamp. A few TVs rested over the bar but were muted as were the denizens of this establishment. The food was good and cheap. John would have found himself well at home here.
I looked at the date of the strip (September 14) and breathed a sign of relief. It was neither Ted’s nor mine’s anniversary date.

John should be proud.
