A few of you may have noticed that my postings of the last month or so have been sparse (or to be more precise non-existent.) It is not from lack of things to do in the garden or interesting events/observations but rather a particularly hectic stretch of life that made blogging difficult if not impossible. Some items I would have blogged about but had to give a miss include:
Birds moving into a decorative birdhouse given to me by my horticultural therapy class
The first strawberries of the season
Runty vegetable plants
Continuing run-ins with chipmunks and raccoons
Ups and downs of June weather
Too many greens
Children and gardens (I may still write this one)
Replanting asparagus
The joys of rhubarb and blueberries
The absence of bees (This one I could still do)
My father’s rose bush
I think you get the idea.
Instead, between dealing with all of these things and other matters, I have been preparing for yet another bicycle trip with my friend Ted. So last year’s Erik and Ted’s Excellent Adventure inspired us to take our wheels North, way North, in 2018. Prince Edward Island to be exact on a 350-mile trip to circle the island over eight days. A local outfitter helped us plan the route, which you can see here. I had visited PEI many years ago with Juana and my daughters on a 2,000-mile plus road trip that took us through Maine, Nova Scotia, and finally to Prince Edward Island where my daughters were excited to visit the fictional homestead of Anne of Green Gables, whose story was written and created by Lucy Maud Montgomery.
I don’t think that such a visit is high on Ted’s and mine agenda as we will focus our time on the beautiful parks, beaches, farms and other natural aspects of PEI. But for both of us, we are looking forward to the food as PEI has a reputation for having some of the best seafood about. Perhaps that is why I have tagged our trip “Cycling for seafood or in search of the perfect chowder.”
