The good thing about summer is that gardening can be put off a bit if needed. In the heat of July and August the lawn doesn’t need much mowing. The propagation of weeds has slowed. And it is harvest time. We still have blueberries though the raspberries/thimbleberries have pretty much been spent. The blackberries have started to come in and we are knee deep in tomatoes, greens, pickling cucumbers and beans.
But the last few weeks has mostly been spent inside redoing the laundry room. So instead of playing around the grounds, I have been tearing apart and then rebuilding a room using my dubious carpentry skills as well as those of laying new tile floors and painting. After two weeks everything is nearly done and yesterday after six hours in the laundry room I was able to go to the garden for a few hours.
Even though I planted the tomatoes in new soil, they still contracted wilt. I saw the fruits of my inattention as many leaves had turned a dry brown and have fallen to the soil. I cut and picked up as much as I could but I still have much more work to do. Rain has been irregular so I haven’t needed to water that much though the next week looks hot and dry so I will need to carve an hour out each day to keep things moist.
Now I can better appreciate the garden. The hummingbirds have just flown by for the morning feeds on the fuchsia and the hostas. The woodpeckers are knocking against the house reminding me that it is time to refill the suet feeder. The lawn looks like it may need a trim in the next day or two. I’m back
