Taking stock

This has been the longest stretch I have not blogged. Like other stretches where I have not written, it has not been because I have been resting on my laurels but rather there were more important things to get done. And when the end of the day came, I was either too tired or indifferent to share my gardening thoughts. The fall has been busy with many projects in the garden and lots of family/friend/volunteer chores. I took a 200 mile bike ride through Long Island wine country. I rebuilt most of the fence facing the street as well as that of my vegetable garden. The house had new windows/doors installed. I had the back patio redone. The front steps were rebuilt. My daughter Sarah got married. I’m going to be a grandparent again.  I may revisit some of those in future posts, but like old magazines that have not been read they will probably not grab my attention or time as I hope to start writing a book in the New Year.

With most chores over, there is more time to reflect and write. Today a thin veil of snow covers the yard and the birds bounce off the maple tree and forsythia bush branches as they take turns on the feeder. The backyard trees have a north-westerly covering of snow as it sticks to their sides. A few chipmunks scamper under the feeder looking for some scraps.

We have the veneer of winter with snow covering the grey of the dormant vegetation. I hope this will help me become a more consistent writer.
