Ironically, the first zoom class at Ann’s Place a few weeks back is held on a lovely day and could have been outside. But everyone seems content and snug in their dwellings to make leaf lanterns. And as the craft requires the use of an iron it may not be a bad idea to do it from home.
The elements for this class are simple: wax paper, leaves, washi tape and battery votives. Washi tape is a wonderful decorative tape make from Japanese paper that is easy to manipulate and use: perfect for this class.
“Here are some different leaves I picked up in my yard,” I start. “Can anyone identify them?”My class scores around 50% on the types I show on the screen. We then start the class by putting the leaves between two sheets of wax paper, ironing them together. The washi tape is next applied to trim the edges of the presssed wax papers and ties everything together to make a simple lantern. All are happy with their results.
Prior to starting, I engage the group in banter as to what about the current weather they are enjoying. Ironically, the consensus is about how this year’s leaf colors are the best in memory. I totally agree.
